The company's history begins in 1956 with Martin Cohen, a young engineer from the Bronx who discovers his love of Latin American music in New York's jazz clubs. He is so captivated by the sound and energy that he soon decides to buy his own bongos, but fails due to trade embargos, which at that time made it impossible to import high quality bongos from Cuba. So Martin Cohen used his technical know-how and built his first own Bongo set. A little later - in 1964 he founded Latin Percussion (LP) and started to deliver bongos and cowbells wrapped in brown paper to musicians in the clubs.
