Microtech Gefell M221 (dunkel bronze)

The M 221 condenser microphone combines universal small-diaphragm capsule technology with a metal membrane and a modular preamplifier. By using a design-tested measuring microphone capsule in combination with a preamplifier with 48V phantom power that is common in recording technology, a constant amplitude and phase frequency response as well as particularly long-term stable transmission properties are achieved. Application Due to its small capsule diameter, the M 221 is particularly suitable for applications where the lowest possible influence on the sound field is desired. It is recommended as the main microphone for recordings that need to have a certain amount of space, as well as as a support microphone for very close miking of instruments where faithful transmission of low frequencies is important. In addition, it can be used to set up multi-channel main microphone arrangements such as AB stereophony or Decca Tree, for which it is particularly suitable with its precise and long-term stable transmission properties. Thanks to the capsule designed as a pressure receiver, the M 221 has excellent transient behavior and is therefore particularly suitable for recording instruments that contain strong impulses. With the two supplied ball attachments of different sizes, an increase in the high frequency range can be created acoustically if necessary to increase the presence and to compensate for the high frequency drop in the diffuse field. The M 221 can also be used in unfavorable climatic conditions, especially in terms of temperature and humidity, for which the TA 202 dry adapter is available as an accessory. Acoustic properties The speaking direction of the M 221 is in the longitudinal direction of the microphone. A condenser capsule with a diameter of 12.5 mm and a very thin metal membrane is used as the sound transducer. The capsule, which works as a pressure receiver, has a spherical directional characteristic without proximity effect. Due to the free-field equalization, the M 221 has a constant amplitude frequency response of 3.5 Hz to 20 kHz (±2 dB). The static pressure equalization between the inside of the capsule and the atmosphere takes place via a capillary to the subsequent preamplifier, which enables the use of the TA 202 dry adapter to protect the microphone when used in high humidity. Operating the M 221 with the KA 3 ball attachment causes an increase in the amplitude frequency response, which starts at approx. 1 kHz and is constant at 3 dB from approx. 4 kHz up to approx. 12 kHz. When using the KA 4 ball attachment, the treble boost also begins at approx. 1 kHz and runs constantly at 3 dB between 3 kHz and 12 kHz. Electrical properties The transformerless circuit design of the impedance converter with a symmetrical output stage enables a control range for sound pressures from 15 dB(A) up to 136 dB with a maximum harmonic distortion of 0.5%. The microphone is connected using a three-pin XLRmale connector with gold-plated contacts, which is also used to provide power through a standardized 48 V phantom power according to IEC 61938 with a current consumption of 5.5 mA. Mechanical properties The M 221 consists of a microphone capsule and microphone preamplifier as independent mechanical units, which are connected to each other by a screw thread to form the complete microphone. The microphone capsule and microphone preamplifier have an identical outer diameter of 12.7 mm, which expands to 21 mm along the length of the microphone preamplifier towards the connection side. The shape of this extension is designed so that the sound field from the M 221 is minimally influenced. The microphone capsule and microphone preamplifier have a combined length of 170.4 mm. Standard microphone holders can be attached to the connection side of the M 221. In order to achieve a high level of attenuation against structure-borne noise and shocks, the elastic holders available as accessories can be used. The weight of the M 221 without the holder is 123 g, which is just as unproblematic for standard tripod booms and holders for multi-channel arrangements as it is for suspended operation on a suitable microphone cable.
