Based on the great success of the KM 184 cardioid microphone, which has quickly become a standard in the worldwide studio scene, the KM 183 microphones with omnidirectional characteristics and the KM 185 with hypercardioid characteristics were created. Acoustic properties The KM 183 and KM 184 microphones are the successors to the proven KM 83 and KM 84, which have been used with great success worldwide since the 1970s. The KM 185 adds the hypercardioid characteristic to the series. The KM 183 pressure receiver has an effective height increase of approx. 7 dB at 10 kHz in a free sound field. This results in a flat frequency response in the diffuse sound field. The pressure gradient receivers KM 184 and KM 185 have very flat frequency responses both on the 0° axis and when sound is incident from the side. Therefore, in practice, large recording angles can be transmitted without coloring the sound. Although the KM 184 is equipped with the same capsule as the KM 84, both microphones differ slightly in the 0° frequency response: The KM 184 adopts the slight increase in the 9 kHz range that was introduced with great success in the KM 140, thus improving the sound character is fresher and more lively than the KM 84, which is completely flat in this area. This difference in sound was not achieved through resonances, but through a slightly modified rear input opening. The KM 185 with its hypercardioid characteristic suppresses sound from the sides and from the rear by 10 dB each. The minimum sensitivity is achieved at a sound incidence angle of 120°. Electrical properties Electrically, the transformerless circuit has been adopted from the KM 100 system. It is responsible for the excellent technical values ​​of the microphones: For example, the usable dynamic range of the KM 184 was expanded by 24 dB compared to the KM 84 thanks to a reduced noise level of only 22 dB (CCIR) and a controllability of up to 138 dB. The microphones enable problem-free work even on unbalanced inputs, such as those found on DAT recorders. The "Series 180" is of course symmetrical and, like all Neumann microphones, is phantom-powered with 48 V.
